And I still remember
the sound the rain made
as it pounded on the roof
over the heads of 14 temporary orphans
And I still remember
the lemonade on my breath
filling the room, too strong, too much
mixing with the sweat
of 400 temporary orphans
Singing the same songs kids like us "danced" to
for the last 50 years
but we didn't care
we'd made fools of ourselves
And I still remember
those 3 weeks
19 days
456 hours
we filled together
strangers from California, Trinidad, Egypt, Japan
that met in Pennsylvania
all pretending we knew what we were doing there
but we didn't care
for 3 weeks
we stopped being nerds
and became slightly cooler nerds
an unexpected congregation
of colored hair and pride flags as capes
coupled with a girl who went everywhere on a scooter
and a boy who never took off his lion patriot mask
The oddest combination of teenagers,
who agreed about conspiracy theories
and scientific theories
and big bang theories
I remember everything
from my crash course in our own brand of pop-culture references
to the purposefully enigmatic faces
that hid the most beautiful brains
